When
I was young
And growing up,
In
the country of Misssip,
While
I was still a pup;
Corn
bread and
Turnip
Greens
Were
on the menu
And
sometimes, butterbeans!

Corn
bread was
Thin
and hot,
With
turnip greens
In
a big black pot.
Thankful
were we
For
what we've got,
As
we ate the greens,
And
drained the pot!

Pot
liquor is an elixir,
So
pure and good,
Mixed
with cornbread,
As
indeed it should.
I'm
gonna' ask my wife,
Who
invigorates my life,
To
make turnip greens
In
a pot, with cornbread
So
good and hot!
